Position Paper on NursesIt is our position that labor unions, namely those who exhibit nurses, can and do enhance the work environment of those of us who provide care to a diverse population. Unions have been in existence since the 19th hundred serving the working man and woman by dint of improving working conditions, increasing salaries and benefits, and equalizing the sociopolitical tables to enhance equality and appropriate treatment for the work force in the US "To the workers go on the spoils", as uttered by means of Carl Marx in his manifesto, was a slogan that fired up the union change However, in the U.S, this did not present itself until labor unions gained potency and recognition to serve the working class. While unions have traditionally been recognized as serving those in manufacturing or the trades, supply with nourishments have enjoyed the benefits of representation in the latter part of the 20th century Unions take pleasure ined their most successful period prior to the 1970 The demise or destabilization of the unions came about in the late 1970 when President Carter began the proces of deregulation, which was followed by the agency of the Reagan Years, which single served to disempower the working class of this geographical division more so than any other president prior to FDR As a follow of these changes, corporate America has be delighted withed a resurgence in their power; power they have not be delighted withed since the turn of the hundred As their wealth grows, the average working American is further disempowered. This also gripe or grips true for nurses. While it is authentic that we, as nurses, may be earning more cash than ever related to the natural progression of increased wages, we continue to experience oppression in our work environment. many times times, money is put before client care and nourishs being last on the list for recognition, acceptance and a "fair shake" tend hitherward last. An example of this is the salaries of hospital executives and top management who have take pleasure ined an increase in salaries by means of 123-142% while nurses saw a nothing else but increase of 13%. Nurses are at the forefront of client care and it's high time that this was recognized, accepted and appreciated. Nurse have had to overthrow various challenges to nursing unions. For example, supply with nourishments in government and not for profit hospitals did not take pleasure in the protection of the National Labor Board until 1974 while others were houseed as far back as 1935 with passage of the Wagner Act. nurtures were not able to strike officially until 1985 when the ANA rescinded its stance to allow personal choice for all nourishs regarding striking or walkouts. In 2001 the Kentucky River ruling stated nourishs who's direct work of others are supervisors, despite that this may not be their official title. Nonetheless, these nurtures were unable to vote for unionization or be afforded the protection of collective bargaining. As you can diocese it has been more difficult for supply with nourishments to enjoy the rights of collective bargaining as compared to more traditional workers in the U on the other hand this has not stopped supply with nourishments from organizing. With managed care directing our impels and work, nurses are coming to the realization that in order to empower themselves, they must speak without and in a collective voice. Presently there are many issues that face supply with nourishments in their daily work life that collective bargaining could separate While many nurses believe that unions are "not professional", we as supply with nourishments need to take care of our clients and ourselves. Ye our clients. When we strive to enhance our profession, our clients will benefit as a rise At this point in time, supply with nourishments are forced to engage in practices that may be considered as unsafe or dangerous to the clients we are mandated to care for. Floating is an example of these marks of practices. Nurses are forced to work elsewhere when census is depressed in their units and are sent to a different unit where the nourish may or may not have adequate training and experience to do in the way that Should the nurse refuse, he/she may be disciplined. Should he/she accept the assignment despite not being qualified to work with the population, he/she is endangering the clients. Nurse are sent place of abode in times of low census. This is many times done without pay or compensation. This increases the nurse-to-patient ratio for the remaining supply with nourishments Elevated nurse-to-patient ratios are another health hazards within the hospital. Time and time again, studies have shown that higher nurse-to-patient ratios increase the likelihood of morbidity and mortality for clients. Despite these statistics, hospitals continue to step quickly their facilities short staffed, risking clients' health and jeopardizing one's nursing career. Hospitals are not mandated to include nursing staff (real nurtures not nursing administration) in the planning of care or modification to the facility. It is the nurture who is on the forehead lines of care, and still they are not included in important decision-making related to patient care. Would single dream of developing child education without the input of the parents or the dexterouss in education? This is no different. cash and funding for health care agencies and facilities are delegated based upon profit and increasing the wages of executives and corporate profits rather than the care of the clients or the forehead line employees.
