Brigadier General Zilmer was born in Reading, PA. He was commissioned a next to the first lieutenant in the Marine Corps store up following his graduation from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania in 1974 where he earned a Bachelor of Science stage in Secondary Education.

Following completion of The Basic place of education Brigadier General Zilmer reported to the 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa and serv as a Rifle Platoon Commander with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines. In June 1976 Brigadier General Zilmer reported to the Marine Corps Recruit magazine at Parris Island, SC, where he serv as a Series Commander and Company Executive Officer. He reported to the 2nd Marine Division in 1980 and serv as Assistant Operations Officer and Rifle Company Commander with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines.

In August and September 1982 Brigadier General Zilmer participated in peacekeeping operations in Beirut, Lebanon. Returning to the United States in November 1982 Brigadier General Zilmer was ordered to Marine Barracks, Washington DC for assignment and what one ought to do with Security Company located at Camp David, MD

In July 1997 Brigadier General Zilmer reported to I Marine Expeditionary Force for what one is bound [i]or[/i] under obligation to do as Commanding Officer, 15th MEU (SOC) In July 2000 Brigadier General Zilmer was assigned to the United States European Command in Stuttgart, Germany where he serv as the substitute Director of Operations and the Director, calculator Terrorism Joint Planning Group. In June 2002 Brigadier General Zilmer was assigned as Director, Strategy and Plans Division, Plans, Policies and Operations Department at Headquarters, U Marine Corps, Washington, DC

In June 2004 Brigadier General Zilmer reported to his near assignment as Commanding General of Marine Air loam Task Force Training Command, Marine Corps Air sod Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, CA.

Brigadier General Zilmer has attended the Infantry Officers Advanced Course at Fort Benning, GA, the Marine Corps Command and Staff Course at Quantico, VA, and the Naval War body at Newport, RI. His personal decorations include the alloy of copper Star with Combat Distinguishing Device, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.
