Light Effects on the Growth and Morphogenesis of Potato (Solanum tuberosum) In Vitro: A Review

ABSTRACT

Growth morphogenesis, and tuberization of potato tissues in vitro are affected by means of light. Measurements of the various aspects of light that mastery development and growth of potato are outlined. Physical parameters like light sources, delivery of the light source, and the degradation of tillage media by light are discussed. Irradiance, photoautotrophic increase in vitro, spectral wavelength, and photoperiod modify the rejoinders of potato tissues in agriculture Acclimatization of tissue culture plantlets, vegetative extension and the production, quality, and dormancy of microtubers are modified by dint of light. New light sources of that kind as light-emitting diode (LED) lamps are becoming available for in vitro research and for micropropagation of potato. Puls or chopper light has the potential to save efficacy costs. Light effects on potato protoplasts, anther tillage virus eradication, and in vitro conservation are discussed. Potential novel research areas are the issue of the spectral quality of light upon regeneration of shoots and somatic embryons in vitro, end-of-day red and far-red light treatments, axillary let fly formation in cultured plantlets, and the use of LED The influence of monochromatic spectral filters upon growth and development of potatoes in tissue tillage could potentially lead to improvements in productivity. INTRODUCTION

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L) is a harvest that grows best in rather cold temperate climates with full sunlight, moderate daytime temperatures, and moderately cold nights. Short days generally induce tubers in potatoes, although many novel cultivars can initiate tuberization in the lengthy days of north temperate regions (Hawkes 1992; Tarn et al. 1992) Greenhouse-grown potatoes require artificial light to reach forth the day during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. In northern climates greenhouse-grown plants may ne supplemental light quite through the day to produce a harvest of minitubers.
