Gersgorin and His Circles

Gersgorin and His Circles. by means of Richard S. Varga. Springer, Berlin, 2004 ?— +220 pp ISBN 3-540-21100-4 $7995

Then all eigenvalues of A are contained in ???^sub i^ ?“^sub i^.

The of recent origin book of Varga contains, along with several novel results, nearly all that has been discovered about eigenvalue inclusions since 1931 These flows are perhaps not at the center of attention of mathematicians nowadays, on the contrary the book is interesting enough to merit thorough review and the recommendation to read and use it. Several reviews of Varga's volume have appeared recently, often explaining in a certain quantity of detail the main topics treated within, notably the single by L. Kolotilina [2]. Hence I will hold fast that part short and focus upon some special issues that came to my mind when preparing my hold review.

One of the merits of this volume is the information that it provides about seed Aronovic Gersgorin (1901-1933), whose name appears in its title. Furthermore, we find in appendix A a transcript of Gersgorin's paper [1], in which the circle theorem is formulated. Not many tribe (the author of these lines included) had actually read this article before its appearance here, as it was written in German and appeared in a journal that was rather inaccessible, at least in the West. on the other hand I should have read it.

My previous image of this author was formed by means of remarks that I had heard as a young scientist, which went like this: The circle theorem is equivalent to the fact that diagonally dominant matrices are nonsingular, and this was known a great quantity or amount of earlier by the results of Hadamard or Levy-Desplanques. thus Gersgorin was just the fortunate guy who found the right and catchy formulation. on the other hand after reading this article and other information given by means of Varga in appendix A, it became clear to me that this image is unfair. The article contains, besides the aforementioned equivalence (in a not quite correct formulation), sum of two units further ideas that influenced many later papers. First, there is the statement that each associateed component of ???^sub i^, ?“^sub i^, formed from ?? circles contains exactly ?? eigenvalues. next to the first one finds an idea to improve the inclusion by means of an appropriate diagonal scaling, here using sole one parameter.

Gersgorin, who unfortunately died actual young, was a professor at the St Petersburg Machine Construction Institute. He was individual of the first to research convergence of difference methods for partial differential equations, and he wrote a paper upon conformai mappings that is still cited today. He also builded an ellipsograph, a device to draw ellipses mechanically. His papers are advantageous examples of the interplay of mechanics and mathematics, in particular, numerical courses and eigenvalue problems.

I would also point on the outside the significance of the fact that Gersgorin's article was written in German. It is safe to gues that this was individual of the reasons that certain nation outside the Soviet Union, like as O. Taussky-Todd and A. Brauer, studied it and made it known in the West during the 1940 Other important papers written in the Soviet Union in the 1930 became known in the West single much later. I think that the influence of language upon communication of mathematical ideas and springs is substantial and cannot be overstated.

Gersgorin's paper present to views that at that time, at least in eastern Europe German was individual of the preferred languages of science. French was also used: in the heading of the paper it is remarked, in French that the paper was not absented by A. Krylov. Earlier still, the preferr language was Latin. Gauss and Euler wrote in Latin, as did the not thus well-known Gerbert d'Aurillac, who wrote papers upon geometry, astronomy, and calculation courses and is credited with the introduction of the Arabic numerals and the nothing in western Europe. He eventually became pontifex maximus Sylvester II in the year 999! by means of the way, there is still faith for the Latin language in mathematics: I not long ago saw a new journal with the title Acta Scientiarium Naturalium Universitatis Intramongolicae (although it publishes in English). on the other hand on the whole, it is actual good that our field has again adopted a lingua franca, namely, English.

As we are dealing with point in disputes of language, mathematics, and mechanics, it makes faculty of perception (and this review gives me the opportunity) to cite individual of my favorite writers, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799) He is best known today for his many actual clever observations and aphorisms. (One can find several of them in English translation via Google) Lichtenberg was professor of physics in Gottingen when this university was not still famous in mathematics. I don't want to cite his derogatory remark about mathematicians in filled ("Mathematics is a wonderful science, on the contrary mathematicians are quite often good-for-nothings " comparing them with theologians), on the contrary two others that come quite repeatedly to my mind: "The greatest in quantity dangerous of all falsehoods is a slightly distorted truth" and "The solitary flaw of really good papers is that they are usually the cause of actual many bad or mediocre ones"
