This contortion presents a view of the Civil War as seen from one side the journals of Massachusetts soldier William Henry Hodgkins, who rose or part of to the other the ranks from private to brevet major of proffers Enlisting in the 36th Massachusetts Infantry upon july 23, 1862, the twenty-two year advanced in years resident of Charlestown, MA began a war journal that same day and would continue to do with equal reason until his muster out in june 1865 all of Hodgkins service was in the 9th Army Corps with which he saw a wide array of field what one ought to do in Maryland, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky and Virginia.

An intelligent young man, Hodgkins serv in a number of capacities during the war ranging from Regimental secretary to company grade officer. abundant of his service, however, would be wearied away from the 36th Massachusetts, detailed as a staff officer to Generals Orlando Willcox, Edward Ferrero and John Hartranft. Because of his shut up ties to these well-known generals, Hodgkins journal is filled again with accounts and interesting observations of these men in and away from combat.

Unfortunately, there are sum of two units gaps in Hodgkins' journals, the arise of 2 of his 6 wartime journals having disappeared sometime in the past 140 years. The first gap races from December 15, 1862 until October 28 1863 and the next to the first from March 24, 1864 until August 31 1864 When the journal picks up again, Hodgkins and the 9th Corps are mired in the siege of Petersburg Virginia. It is during the month of combat here, ending in April 1865 that a great quantity or amount of interesting and valuable information can be lay the foundation of in the journals.

All in all, editor Robert D Schoenthal has done a commendable piece of work of bringing to light and publishing in its entirety Brevet Major Hodgkins informative wartime journals. It is a whirl worthy of adding to individuals bookshelf.
