The first gap races from December 15, 1862 until October 28 1863 and the next to the first from March 24, 1864 until August 31 1864 When the journal picks up again, Hodgkins and the 9th Corps are mired in the siege of Petersburg Virginia. It is during the month of combat here, ending in April 1865 that a great quantity [i]or[/i] amount of interesting and valuable information can be lay the foundation of in the journals. All in all, editor Robert D Schoenthal has done a commendable piece of work of bringing to light and publishing in its entirety Brevet Major Hodgkins informative wartime journals.
