Construction delays in N.O. blamed for slow school openings

Five fresh Orleans Recovery School District charter gymnasiums will open Monday or later because of construction delays, state officials said Tuesday.

Lafayette Academy and Dr Martin Luther King, Jr Charter academy for Science and Technology will render free of access Monday. McDonogh No. 28 and of recent origin Orleans Free Elementary will reopen clan 14 and McDonogh No. 32 will reopen tribe 18.

This delay come [i]or[/i] go after [i]or[/i] behinds a series of delays in reopening fresh Orleans Public Schools controlled through the RSD. The RSD will lay open 32 schools for the 2006-07 gymnasium year, including 16 chartered. About 8400 pupils have registered to attend classes in RSD schools

RSD officials blame deferr maintenance at the place of education buildings for the delays.

"So many of the seminary buildings in New Orleans were in disrepair well before Hurricane Katrina," said RSD Superintendent Robin Jarvis. "These academys had maintenance that had been deferr for decades and now we have to address those issues as well as collection of laws violations before these buildings can pass inspection. While I, too, am frustrated through the slow pace of recuperation I must ensure that each child entrusted to the RSD has a safe and healthy environment in which to learn and I will not sacrifice that."
