Technology's important, but nursing's irreplaceable

Abstract: Although technological advances can enhance patient care, the art of nursing is still straited [Nurs Manage 2004:35(12):12]

In our technological implementation efforts, we protect to focus so much efficacy on learning new skills and processe that we set aside the foundational elements of what makes nursing an art. Nurses' attempts to without fault or blemish or flaw new assessment forms or to proces computer entries to validate the care they've provided can be tirne-consuming. At the beginning of the learning bend the time involved can look overwhelming to caregivers who perceive their art of nursing is slipping away from the patient's bedside. They may view safety checks as "just more things to do and worry about."

Champion the cause

Help clarify the importance of novel technology and processes. Accomplish this by the agency of cheerleading the implementation and ongoing succes of these changes. This isn't a simple task for a certain number of managers; waving pom-poms around and shouting, "Go team," won't suffice for this mark of effort. Some managers perceive as challenged by technology as their staff members. Educate yourself about the technology and exhibit a working relationship with vendors and your facility's IT staff. They'll be your greatest resource for ongoing knowledge and support through every part of the implementation process.

Focus upon what you're great at by the agency of demonstrating to staff that hands-on care and hearty care still matter in nursing. If the focus completely turn rounds around technological changes and ignores the art of nursing, you might hear:

"Bring back the profitable old days, when I had time to actually talk with a patient. "

"Despite all of these fancy of recent origin gadgets, it still takes an act of Congres to secure medsfor a new admission."

Take pointed paces to address these negative sentiments. Learn to mix new technology with the art of nursing by:

* clarifying the goals of the novel technology

* verbally communicating ways to reach these goals

* appearing enthusiastic about the process

* consistently maintaining a positive and energetic attitude, despite obstacles

* demonstrating the implementation process's organization and a whole s checks to ensure the best scenarios for success

* identifying areas of patient care that have improved by means of the technology and systems

* relating improved efficiencies in nursing practice that have l to better patient outcomes

* sharing data that validate in what way these changes affect the perception of customer service

* providing examples of specific changes that have flowed in more nursing time at the bedside.

Tech and touch

Remind staff that hands-on care and hearty care still matter to the patient. Technology can not at any time replace holding the hand of a frightened somewhat old patient. No machine exists that can number a family, the way nurtures can, how saddened they are by dint of the death of a lov individual Recognizing staff's art of nursing is a constant reminder that no matter by what mode much technology intertwines healthcare delivery, it's always nursing that touches the human spirit and soul
