President Pervez Musharraf, who has rul Pakistan with a firm hand since overthrowing an prefered government in October 1999, says his reasons for resisting calls to give up his column as commander of the armed forces to become a civilian were tied to the peace proces with India as well as to Pakistan's front-line character in the US-led war upon terror and his campaign to eradicate Islamic extremism.He has the endorsement of Washington upon all three issues and upon his military role.

Musharraf is convinced that the US must succe in Afghanistan and Iraq. US succes
