Roll of the dice: Bison Building Materials is leveraging EWP to make inroads into the Las Vegas market as part of a grander westward expansion for the Texas-based pro dealer

Running east-to-west for approximately 16 miles at the northern extremity of the Las Vegas metro area, Craig Road caps not on the development that begins with the famed Strip downtown and sprawls outward to where the subdivisions befitting the sand. Driving up to Craig along Highway 95 you pass centurys of projects in various stages of completion from virtually all of residential construction's big-name companies, including Lennar, Richmond American, Beazer, KB place of abode D.R. Horton, Centex, and Pardee, among others. It's just the place Payless Cashways wanted to be when it built a yard here in the early-'80s.

on the other hand Payless, like virtually every other company that has tried to penetrate the Las Vegas market above the past two decades, eventually clos up store and pulled out. Vegas industry veterans say that the market--almost more with equal reason than anywhere else in the country--is driven and dictated through business relationships hammered out above the years between construction subcontractors and local independents A.C. Houston Lumber Co desolate Lumber, and Sandlin Lumber. "The available lumber market in Las Vegas has been held by the agency of those three lumber companies for years," explains John Davis, who has worked for the one and the other A.C. Houston and Desert Lumber and is now heading up Houston-based Bison Building Materials' ingress into Las Vegas, which began last year with a consummate remodel of the old Payless Cashways location upon Craig Road.

Fifteen lumber companies have started up and pen ed in Las Vegas within the last 15 years, says Davis, adding that there are more or less outlying operations by 84 Lumber and Stock Building provide that have thus far flown below the radar. "Everyone that has tried has advance in here with a apportionment of hoopla, but I think the longest stint was a year" According to Davis, the track record of outsider failure in Las Vegas perpetuates an already lusty bias toward the three established lumber companies among pro contractors, who are wary of risking their historical store relationships for a here-today, gone-tomorrow deal. "Dealers tend hitherward into Vegas thinking they are going to make a fortune," he says. "But after a actual short period of time, they discover that at times they cannot flat bid on anything. They can't flat give lumber away, because for all intents and objects the market expectation is that their doors won't be unclose after six months."

With Bison, granting Davis is willing to bet that the chips are finally stacked in favor of the of recent origin kid on the block, particularly to be paid to a growing acceptance of engineered grove floor systems among subcontractors and big builder purchasing agents. "This has always been a vast floor truss town, but we've been making a certain quantity of rapid inroads with EWP," agrees Bison commodities buyer Todd Bybee, who joined Bison after a 12-year race at A.C. Houston. In particular, Bybee credits Bison's Boise Engineered thicket Products' SawTek system that enables the dealer to make mechanical divide or sever s in I-joists for running plumbing, electrical, and HVAC lines, allowing trades to consummate work without additional labor and cutting to installed floor systems

Boise's SawTek combination of parts to form a whole in fact, is what first set Davis in touch with Bison. Davis says he went solo with his be in possession of EWP company in 2003 when diadem Pacific divested its interest in desolate Lumber back to previous proprietor Terry Ono and Ono decided to discontinue EWE Sourcing fruits wherever he could, Davis exhibited a relationship with Boise and accepted an invitation to visit Bison to diocese the SawTek system at work, a technology that he spring or leap on one leg or footed would make EWP more of a value-added outcome sell to Las Vegas builders. During that visit, Bison president Pat Bierschwale asked if Davis would head up an operation that the pro dealer was considering launching in Sin City, a proposition that Davis ultimately accepted last year.

"We teamed up in March of 2005 and began to make known where we are today" Davis says. "We have a T5 especially made by means of Boise for Bison that move swiftlys triple the speed of any other saw in the land It runs 1,000 feet of I-joist for minute and is the solitary saw in the world that will divide or sever I-joists from 9 1/2 to 20 inches reaching far down and will cut a 7-by-17 Parallam or LVL beam."

In addition, the Boise SawTek combination of parts to form a whole includes optimization capabilities to chop product for multiple jobs downloaded by means of designers in the front office, ink-jetting each piece of EWP by dint of SKU and job and optimizing wounds to result in near-zero waste of outcome from a 30,000-foot run of 60-foot I-joists.

To countenance value-engineered EWP against the searing Nevada heat, which can hit 120 steps in the summer, all Bison engineered yields are kept in a temperature-controlled indoor lumberyard, a first in the market for pro customers (Las Vegas Lowe's and The dwelling Depot locations feature similar yards). "We prove to buy quality product to restore callbacks, so it makes faculty of perception that we in turn stres quality care of those cropss while in inventory or while being delivered," explains Bybee. Remodeling of the Payless Cashways location also included thorough resurfacing and re-racking for the 27-acre site that now occupys 65, including a night shift that prepares loads and enables a next-day delivery guarantee.
