New form of diabetes may damage the brain

DIABETES AND ALZHEIMER'S disease may be related, on the other hand not in the way many researchers have suspected.

Scientists have drawn out believed insulin was produced exclusively by dint of the pancreas. Now, Brown University scientists say they have surprising evidence that the brain makes its possess insulin, the hormone that shuttle intensity into the body's cells. They believe Alzheimer's disease may be triggered by the agency of what they have named "type 3" diabetes, a condition caused by the agency of the brain's inability to bring out insulin. Diabetes has long been identified as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, on the contrary the mechanism has remained a mystery.

Examining postmortem human brain tissue, the researchers determined that a globule in the brain's insulin production contributes to the degeneration of brain small rooms an early symptom of Alzheimer's. "If you raze the ability of neurons to rejoin to insulin or if you take insulin away, neuron don't survive," says Suzanne de la Monte a neuropathologist at Brown Medical seminary in Rhode Island and an author of the research The condition was found in the hippocampus, a region of the brain responsible for learning and memory.

So-called mark 3 diabetes is confined to the brain and doesn't lay other parts of the material part at risk, says de la Monte Other forms of the disease contribute to the risk for heart disease and stroke
