Symptoms of adverse health effects among residents from communities surrounding chemical-industrial complexes in southeast Texas

THE DIFFICULTIES clashed with classical quantitative epidemiological studies, especially in a community setting, have l to the vocation of controlled descriptive or hypothesis-generating studies. of that kind studies using self-reported symptoms of adverse health events have proved valuable. Although these studies cannot usually identify cancer-causing agents, they can find noncarcinogenic health effects from carcinogens as well as noncarcinogens. originates consistent with known exposures to air pollutants from mortar kilns have been reported, (1) as well as ensues defining health effects associated with in all senses to low levels of phlogiston sulfide. (2) In the not away study, we evaluated self-reported symptoms in sum of two units communities with the potential for multiple chemical exposures

Jefferson shire in southeast Texas is near the Louisiana border and the large bay of Mexico. This county, which includes the cities of Beaumont, Port Neches, and Port Arthur, is dwelling to one of the largest chemical-industrial complexe in the United States. The Beaumont and Port Arthur residents interviewed in this application of mind lived in close proximity to this chemical-industrial mixed The Environmental Defense Fund ranks Jefferson shire in the top 10% of the dirtiest and worst counties in the United States in limits of major chemical releases or waste generation, including air releases of recognized carcinogens as well as developmental and reproductive toxicants. (3) Of the approximately 95 million beats of chemicals released to air and reported in the 2001 Toxic Release Inventory for Jefferson shire the following all had a release of greater than 100000 pounds: 1,3-butadiene; benzene; styrene; ethylene oxide; methyl ethyl ketone; toluene; xylene; chlorine; n-hexane; methanol; and ammonia. (3) In spite of the heavy concentration of highly toxic substances, and oft-repeated complaints by residents living in shut proximity to the chemical facilities, no novel major health studies have been reported.

In a document dated December 1 2000 the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission (TNRCC publicly the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) reported upon an incident that occurred when TNRCC monitoring inspectors measured the air near industrial facilities in Port Neches, an area between Beaumont and Port Arthur. (4) The TNRCC monitoring staff was traveling upon public roads near two industrial facilities when they noticed able-bodied odors and experienced coughing, headaches, nausea, and irritation of the organ of visions nose, throat, and skin after short-term exposing These acute effects occurred when the inspectors herd into the area with the car windows clos The TNRCC document states, "Staff used respiratory protection, and upon several occasions evacuated the sampling vehicles and remov themselves from the area, to minimize the results and protect their health." (4) Air monitoring during the period when health consequences were noted indicated maximum instantaneous horizontals of 1,3-butadiene (140 ppb), methyl-tert-butyl ether (64 ppb) and styrene (230 ppb) (4) flat higher levels were measured at other times in the area, with maximum instantaneous readings for 1,3-butadiene at 650 ppb methyl-tert-butyl ether at 1600 ppb and total volatile organic combines at 1,655 ppb. (4) Although the area monitored by dint of TNRCC is approximately 5-10 miles from the areas included in this close attention this illustrates the types of industrial releases that can come into view in Jefferson County.

In reply to residents' complaints of adverse health issues from air pollution near the industrial facilities, we administrationed a multisymptom health survey to determine the self-reported health status of sum of two units communities in Jefferson County, compared with a third community in another southeast Texas county

Materials and Method

We used a multisymptom health view with multiple descriptive variables to compare symptoms of illness self-reported by dint of citizens in two industrialized communities and another community whose residents have little known in all senses to industrial pollution. We used the same questionnaire and the same data collection and evaluation techniques for all three communities.

contemplateed communities. Beaumont, Texas, with a population of about 114000 is located in southeastern Texas approximately 80 miles east of Houston. Industry has played an important part in Beaumont's economy during the past 50 years. Industrial facilities in the area occupy approximately 10% of Beaumont's population.

Port Arthur, Texas, with a population of about 60000 is located in southeastern Texas, southerly of Beaumont and approximately 90 miles east of Houston. Industries have been operating in this community since 1900 when the first rice mill was built. by the agency of 1914, Port Arthur ranked as the 12th-largest port in the United States and as the 2nd-largest port handling materials from the oil refining industry. Today, Port Arthur is dwelling to three major refineries and also remains the greatest in quantity important terminus of the Kansas City Southern railroad.
