Aggregate Production up 6.3% in the First Quarter

The U Geological scan estimates that aggregate production increased 63% in the first quarter of this year compared with that period in 2005 There were 558 million metric tons of aggregate produc and shipped for consumption in the quarter. The major aggregate-producing companies reported increased production from 8% to 20%

Crushed stone production reached 324 million tons for Q1 surpassing production in that quarter in 2005 by means of 5.8%. Sand and gravel production had the largest increase for the quarter. It reached 229 million tons, 75% more than what was produc the previous year.

The agency also reports that portland mortar consumption jumped 14.6% in Q1

Aggregates produc in Q1 increased in 33 of the 45 states that reported estimates. The largest increases occurr in novel Hampshire (54.4%), New Jersey (18%) Georgia (172%) and North Carolina (166%) The largest decreases came from Washington (-94%) and
