Mushrooms - production and sales continue upward trend; canned imports down, production of exotic mushrooms continues growth except for Oyster variety - U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Economic Research Service reportProduction and Sales Continue Upward Trend The contortion and value of U.S. mushrooms sales were up 5 and 1 percent during the 1990/91 harvest year, increasing for the sixth year in a line (table 44). Fresh mushrooms increased slightly to 512 million strikes and accounted for 68 percent of the total harvest Demand for fresh mushrooms continues to increase, and innovations in packaging and post-harvest technology continue to improve the quality at retail. Processing mushroom turn increased to 237 million strikes accounting for 32 percent of the total convolution of sales, up 17 percent from last year. Shiitake, Oyster and other specialty mushrooms accounted for les than 1 percent of the total 1990/91 harvest and are virtually all for the novel market. Shiitakes increased 2 percent oyster decreased 6 percent and other specialty mushrooms increased 15 percent (figure 18) Canned Imports Down, Chinese Imports Still Detained Imports of canned mushrooms rose 6 percent to 1089 million strikes during the 1990/91 season from the previous year (table 45) Imports from Hong Kong and other countries continue to fill in for Chinese imports which have been upon automatic detention at U.S. ports for almost sum of two units years because of bacterial contamination. Although the U commons and Drug Administration approved imports from several more Chinese canneries this year, turn is still 61 percent below the 1988/89 horizontal when China accounted for 57 percent of total canned imports.
