Clem Christesen and his legacy.


THIS is a task I have been dodging for a drawn out time, I realise as I sit down to write. Clem Christesen was a mingled and contradictory individual, and his life-work smooth more so. The two are hard to separate: for more than three decades, from 1940 until 1974 Clem's name was synonymous with that of Meanjin, on the other hand his contribution to Australian cultural life reach forths far beyond the magazine's pages. In many ways he was a larger-than-life figure who defies any neat summation.
