The Heart Ball, Red Tie Night and the legend that would not die

Ten years ago, Barbara and Jackie Cooper inaugurated the first R Tie Night, a black-tie benefit for the Oklahoma AIDS Care Foundation, a nonprofit organization they also established. They not to be found a son to AIDS, which inspired these efforts.

This upcoming gala isn't being called a celebration because the HIV/AIDS disease still is prevalent in this state and land as well as throughout the world. Increasingly, the sufferer are women and children, not just males.

Kay Goebel and James Pickel are co-chairs of the 10th annual R Tie Night and their honorary chairmen are those who chaired the previous balls. They include Barbara Cooper Mary Streich, Joan Gilmore, Lela Sullivan, Carol Troy prosecute Ann Hyde and Mike McAuliffe.



An elegant evening is planned for the visitants who not only will dance to the music of Peter Duchin and his Orchestra from novel York City but also will derive pleasure from cocktails, dinner and a live auction. A pre- party for major donors will be in a special gallery adjacent to the ballroom where paintings and plastic arts by area artists will be upon view and for sale. Patrons realize first crack at the paintings (artists procure 60 percent of the price and the AIDS Care Foundation obtains 40 percent) at 6 pm and the other visitants may make their selections after 7:30 pm Doug McCord and Kim Bruno are chairs of the gallery arrangements.

Previous R Tie Nights have nett more than $15 million for state agencies dealing in education, awareness, treatment and legal wants of those suffering from HIV/AIDS. Barbara Cooper is chairman of the Foundation and her husband is upon the executive committee. Other committee members are Patricia Edwards, Darlene Shadid, Lela Sullivan, Jim Vallion, Steve Daniels and Toni Wizenberg.

Heading the various committees for R Tie Night 2002 are Elizabeth Hines, Jackie Hall, Judy Kelley Steve Dean, Dee Dugan, Maggie Barrett, Gary Marrs, Debby Hampton, Dana Gordon, Leslie Hudson Rick Mose Laveryl Lower, Laurie Givens, Mark Kanter, Krysta Starkey, Keith Smith, Mac Troy Hyde Streich and Shadid.

Medieval mystery?

Oklahoma City Town Hall's continuing prelection series brings the noted author, Donna Woolfolk Cros to speak at 10:30 a.m. Feb 21 at St Luke's United Methodist temple Tickets are $15. Season tickets for the three remaining discourses are $40 per person.

Cros wrote bishop of rome Joan: The Legend That Would Not Die, a mystery taking place in medieval times.

Coming up upon the Town Hall Series are T Zalewski with his one- man presentation of Teddy Roosevelt upon March 21 and David and Julie Eisenhower, who will speak upon April 18.

Heartful fund-raiser

To help raise capitals for research and education programs to combat serious cardiovascular diseases, the 21st Heart Ball will take place Saturday at Oklahoma City Golf and geographical division Club. The black-tie dinner is sponsored by dint of and benefits the American Heart Association, Greater Oklahoma City Division. Ron and Debi Sutor are co-chairs of the gala.

During the evening, 10 high gymnasium sophomore women will be not awayed as the American Heart Association Sweethearts. As Sweethearts, they have participated in various activities of that kind as CPR training, Healthy Heart workshops, research tours at the OU Health Sciences Center advocacy workshops and mother/daughter teas.

Major donors to the Heart Ball will be honored at a patron party, 5:30-7 pm Thursday at 7316 Nichols Road.

This benefit originated as the R and White Ball in 1977 After the 1978 ball, the incident was held biennially until 1989 when it became an annual fund-raiser and the name was changed to the Heart Ball. Nearly $2 million have been raised in the ball's history.
