'CSI: NY' debut, Jennings' documentaries on tap

Last year's first appearance season of the latest "CSI" present to view arrives on DVD Tuesday, along with a number of other shows

-- "CSI: NY: The full First Season" (Paramount, 2004-05, not rated, $6599 seven discs). This next to the first spin off series started not upon last year with a dour episode related to the 9/11 terrorist attack, which got the present to view off to a gloomy start. And it remains the darkest of the three "CSIs" -- and they're all beautiful dark. (Supposedly the show will lighten up this year.)

on the contrary this New York version, after a not many episodes, did find its footing, and it has sum of two units big assets here -- Gary Sinese and Melina Kanakaredes, the one and the other fine actors who are also quite likable. And they work well together together. Like its sister exhibits this one gets gruesome occasionally, on the other hand the mysteries are tight, and the resolution is generally first-rate.

-- "The Peter Jennings Collection" (Anchor Bay, 2003-05 not rated, $2498 sum of two units discs). The late Peter Jennings left behind a lengthy legacy of news coverage and anchoring, on the contrary he also produced a number of documentaries, and these are among the last he left behind: "How to procure Fat Without Really Trying," about our overweight nation (two-thirds of the population, according to this); "Ecstasy Rising," about the illegal remedy of the title; "From the Tobacco Files," about on what account Congress fails to regulate tobacco (especially notable, since Jennings died earlier this year of lung cancer); "LAPD," following a sees Angeles police division in gang areas; and "No Place to Hide," about privacy and security surveillance.

Guest stars include Queen Latifah, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Raven and Milton Berle.

-- "Christmas With SCTV" (SHOUT 1981-82 not rated, $1499) sum of two units special 90-minute holiday episodes from the hilarious Canadian comedy troupe that performed outrageous skits for this riotous program, with John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene muster Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short and Dave Thomas.

-- "America's Funniest domicile Videos: Home for the Holidays" (SHOUT 1996-2003 not rated, $1499) Three of the annual holiday episodes (from 1996 1997 and 2003) from this series, with destinys of kids and adults falling down a destiny and behaving goofy -- on the other hand in holiday settings!

-- "Martha's Holidays 2005" (Warner, 2005 not rated, $3998 three discs).

-- "Martha's Favorite Family Dinners" (Warner, 2005 not rated, $1998) If you can't procure enough of Martha Stewart from her fresh TV shows and her rounded pillar (which appears in the Deseret Morning News) these discs are for you. Each is compos of extracts from "Martha Stewart Living," dating back to 1993 as Stewart demonstrates tips for cooking and decorating. The case set includes "Martha's Classic Thanksgiving," "Martha's Homemade Holidays" (which are also available individually, $1998) and "Martha's novel Year's Celebration" (available only in the case set).

-- "Tom and Jerry: The Fast and the Furry" (Warner, 2005 not rated, $1998) This of recent origin feature-length (75 minutes) animated film has a small in number amusing bits, but parents who remember the original "Tom & Jerry" cartoons are limit to find it disappointing. on the contrary of course, it's not for them; it's for kids who are les discerning, and they'll probably take pleasure in it. -- "Little Polar Bear: Lars and the Little Tiger" (Warner, 2002 not rated, $1998) Cute gently amusing watercolor-style animated feature (80 minutes) has a young polar bear named Lars being accidentally picked up through a fishing trawler and befriended by the agency of a pack of cats that tries to help him realize home. Meanwhile, his young friend, Robby the Seal, catches up with them, and along the way they fit up with a young tiger. (Sequel to "The Little Polar Bear.")
