Effects of Dyad Reading Instruction on the Reading Achievement of Hispanic Third-Grade English Language LearnersAbstract This inquiry investigated the effects of a cooperative peer-assisted reading strategy, dyad reading instruction, upon the reading achievement of Hispanic third-grade English language learners (ELLs) Specifically, dyad reading is unison reading of a "lead reader," who reads well, and an "assisted reader," who does not read well, simultaneously reading aloud at a normal rate (Eldredge 1995) The participants in this close attention came from colonias, which are characterized as poverty-stricken semi-rural areas where family settle and live (Sharp, 1998) The participants were 80 third-grade ELL with 40 in the experimental collection and 40 in the sway group. A quasi-experimental nonrandomized pretest-posttest mastery group research design was occupyed An analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data obtained. The comes yielded by two portions of the instrument were statistically significant upon reading fluency and reading comprehension; however, the third portion of the instrument did not yield statistically significant be deriveds for reading comprehension. It is intimateed that through a cooperative peer-assisted reading strategy of that kind as dyad reading, students will learn from single another in this social connection of reading. Introduction The National Research Council (1998) states that "reading is essential to succes in our society" (p 17) Reading is also central to a child's experiences in place of education and in everyday life. Thus, teaching children to read is a major task for reading teachers today. Because children arrive in gymnasiums at different reading developmental stages, reading teachers are faced with helping les capable readers improve their reading skills by dint of providing the best reading instruction possible. Teachers can benefit from peer-assisted learning strategies to help these les capable readers. Enright and McCloskey (1988) state that "using cluster paired and small group activities has shown an increase in academic achievement" (p 221) Utilizing peer-assisted strategies is important particularly for reading instruction because these strategies allow scholars to venture cooperatively on reading tasks and assist single another in the process. Some researchers would argue that the majority of learning is shaped through social processes (Vygotsky, 1978). Learning to read end social interactions between peers can be referr to as a form of cooperative learning. above the past years, an impressive material part of research on practices based upon the social aspects of learning of the like kind as cooperative learning has been bring togethered suggesting that students achieve more in cooperative learning collections than they do when working by means of themselves (Stevens, Madden, Slavin, & Famish, 1987) Cooperative learning processs are proposed as a major constituting of bilingual education programs as well (Slavin, 1988) because of the rich words immediately preceding or following for language learning it provides. Using paired and small-group activities increases the amount of meaningful and interesting language provided for English language learners (ELLs) and increases the opportunities to use the target language (Enright & McCloskey 1988) ELL working cooperatively upon assignments and projects with native English speakers increases the opportunities to hear and bring out language and to negotiate meaning with others (Carrrasquillo & Rodriguez, 1996) Furthermore, students' self-conceit intergroup relations, and ability to work with others are significantly enhanced from one side the use of cooperative learning (Slavin). Cooperative learning activities provide a nonthreatening atmosphere in which ELL are able to interact freely and perceive accepted and more confident about themselves, thus raising their self-conceit (Carrasquillo & Rodriguez). In addition, Joyce Weil, and Calhoun (2000) present that cooperative learning is stimulating not solitary socially but also intellectually. Thus, tasks using cooperative learning manners designed to enhance social interactions would also enhance academic learning. Dyad reading is a impressed sign of cooperative learning method that can be used to help children with reading. Evidence strike one as beings to be mounting that tenders poor readers can be helped to read better if they are assisted to read material that is too difficult for them to read fluently by dint of themselves, especially when those reading experiences focus upon the content of the body rather than on the words (Eldredge 1988) "Group assisted reading is a strategy intended to adapt dyad reading to clumps of children who could not individually read grade horizontal material" (Eldredge, 1990, p. 126) The intent of this study was to describe the consequence of dyad reading instructions upon the reading achievement of Hispanic third-grade ELL Dyad reading has not been investigated as an instructional strategy for ELL because studies guidanceed on dyad reading have focused upon native English speakers. Thus, there exists a ne to note the issue such a cooperative peer-assisted reading strategy would have upon this population.
