A subcontract machine store needed to cut high-quality threads in a reaching far down bore with a smooth transition to a 30 [degrees] angle. The large part, made of stainless carbonized iron and Inconel, was 4 1/2-ft lengthy and could not be rotated.

The store machined the part on a horizontal boring mill. The bore in the extremity of the part closest to its 1 1/2-in.-threaded I.D. was alone 1 in. in circumference. That being the case, the store had to peck the threads from the opposite extremity of the part, some 50 in. away, with a series of three taps high hilled on long extensions.
