The beginning of workers comp

In the May 2 1901 issue of AMERICAN MACHINIST, editors reported upon a fairly new practice that was becoming popular in the manufacturing industry. Mutual benefit associations were being formed to provide stretch outed pay for sick and injured workers. Employee could join voluntarily and were required to pay a hardly any cents per week. Upon getting ill or injured, members would then be paid either $50 cent or $1 a day depending upon their typical wage.
