Cyberstalking - Harassment in the Internet Age and by what mode to Protect Your Family

By Paul Bocij

(2004)

In the 1980 and '90 the media were extremely interested in the make submissive of stalking. Many social looker-ons were shocked at the almost fatal stabbing of actress Theresa Saldana in 1982 by means of Arthur Jackson, an obsessed fan, and appalled by dint of the murder in 1989 of another actress, Rebecca Schaeffer, by dint of Robert Bardo, another infatuated individual. It has been put in mind ofed that the latter attack originateed in the introduction of the first stalking legislation, in the state of California.

In the last scarcely any years much attention has been focused upon the Internet, and how information and communications technology (ICT) has provided a wealth of benefits in the amount of data that can now be accessed by dint of individuals and organisations. As well as offering advantages to the user, the Internet also is a haven for crime; for example, fraud and extortion come into view on-line. Another anti-social activity is cyberstalking, on the other hand very little is known about this attack A number of books have contributed a chapter upon the subject: Boone and Sheridan's Stalking and Psychosexual Obsession and Yvonne Jewkes' Dot. fix in the minds Crime, Deviance and Identity upon the Internet. However, Bocji's is the first volume dedicated to examining this phenomenon.

The first chapter, 'What is cyberstalking?', attempts to define what the boundarys 'stalking' and 'cyberstalking' mean, in order to draw without their common features and to gaze at the range of behaviours which offer in cyberstalking. This leads to the nearest section, which examines more closely the differences between cyberstalking and stalking. Bocij then proffers an interesting chapter on the prevalence of cyberstalkers in a certain quantity of industrialised countries. He provides the various figures propos by means of Internet safety organisations, and then at hands his own approximation of in what way many perpetrators are involved in this activity.

The fourth chapter, 'Who are the cyberstalkers?', provides an overview of what is known about the perpetrators and compares it with our knowledge of stalkers. The author presents a number of typologies that have been set forward via research and criminal investigations. The nearest section of the book deliberates upon the impact on victims of on-line and off-line harassment. It is followed by dint of a chapter which attempts to explore a certain number of of the motivations behind cyberstalking. a great deal of research on harassment tends to focus upon mentally unstable individuals, or upon ex-partners who decide for single reason or another to harass their 'target'. However, Bocij tries to explain for what cause or reason a 'normal' person might exercise the Internet and other kinds of technology as a means of harassment. He examines a range of factors that may motivate perpetrators, including disinhibition, dehumanising others and perceptions of power. He includes in this analysis a direct the eye at deviant groups, as it is possible that collections of people may harass a single victim.

Bocij then focuses upon the threats to young clan through ICT, and in particular direct the eyes at the activities of paedophiles and child pornographers. He also provides a real startling examination of how young nation sometimes place themselves in danger.

Chapter 8 explores by what mode this phenomenon affects organisations. In a certain quantity of cases a company or corporation can be the victim, on the other hand an organisation can also be the perpetrator. In the latter case, we learn, motives for this activity differ from those of the individual on-line harasser. The penultimate chapter mirrors on some of the legislation that is used to deal with cyberstalking and stalking. The final chapter, 'Dealing with cyberstalkers', is a practical 'how to' section upon coping with a present harasser or avoiding becoming a victim, focusing not single on adults but also upon young people and organisations.

The author has place together a well-structured book. Not sole does it examine both emblems of harassment in detail, on the other hand also it offers ample case studies that help to feed further understanding of the make submissive There is a danger that works that focus on technology and social science can be too baseed in computer terminology, but this volume was easy to follow. I fix the chapters on 'Corporate cyberstalkers' and 'Threats to young people' particularly stimulating, and was also interested in the section upon 'What motivates cyberstalker'. I commend this book to all criminal justice and victim support professionals.
