A little rice and a certain number of antifreeze might be the ingredients for cheaper, cleaner silicon-based blends Richard Aline, University of Michigan professor and materials scientist, has combined rice husk antifreeze, and a caustic to exhibit silicon-based chemicals, which could help manufacturers create silicon mixs without expensive, high-temperature processing. The nearly nontoxic mode uses rice hull ash, created as a byproduct of routine burning of thousands of tons of rice husks daily, to yield numerous silicon-containing chemicals, polymer and plastics.
