A of recent origin noncontact capacitive sensing technology from Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, is being used to retain robots at correct distances and orientations from surfaces in hazardous environments.

The technology is being applied to disentangle a sensor system for standoff command of robots, converting sensor information into maps of the environment in order to locate and
