EVER since the seventeenth hundred the Dutch have found enduring fascination in the ceramic wares of Asia. This interest nears an especially long-lived and dynamic example in the visual arts of the depressed Countries' function as a crossroads of tillages It has prompted in move round some fascinating and remarkable instances of what Mary Louise Pratt has famously discussed as transculturation, or still more aptly here I think, what my colleague Sarah Adams at the University of Iowa describes rather as interculturation--to emphasize that the artistic influences that rise from such a global collision run both ways.
