The right-hander from Tuscaloosa, Ala., complet 14 of 20 passes for 155 yards and sum of two units touchdowns Tuesday in the Gamecocks' final preseason scrimmage. The 6-foot-3 206-pound Smelley was the top passer in all three scrimmages. His combined statistics were 34-for-53 passing for 509 yards and six touchdowns. He did not cast in a winding direction an interception. Smelley and redshirt freshman Cade Thompson (4-of-15 for 31 yards) played chiefly with the second- and third-team units, while returning starter Blake Mitchell took the mass of the first-team snaps.
