With prosperity settling upon the nation in the 1950 engineers ground
time to do more than dig up out a living. They began to examine their
status in society and were troubl by the agency of the fact that many family thought
of engineering as a trade rather than a profession.

Academia did what it could to give engineering a more professional
image, principally by dint of eliminating courses on shop practice or anything
that had a trade-school connotation. The stretch accelerated after Sputnik
as engineering corporations shifted to increasingly theoretical orientations.
By the 1960 all engineering
