In May 1988 Russell Nieves interviewed for the position of general
manager of Bell Industries Inc., Ann Arbor, Mich. Nieves complet
an application that stated occupation could be terminated at any time
at the will of the employer According to Nieves, however, Bell's
interviewer, David Lerner told him this provision did not apply to
him, and that the general manager position was lengthy term.

Nieves began work for Bell in June After a training session, he received
an employee handbook that said business could be terminated at any
time with or without cause and with or
