The Field of Praise: New and Selected Poemsby Marilyn Nelson (Louisiana State University Pres 1997 $24.95)--Marilyn Nelson University of Connecticut English professor and author of sum of two units previously published poetry books (Magnificat and The Homeplace, for which she was a National volume Award finalist), is a powerful writer, able to summon forth images of stirring and lasting impressions. Her metrical compositions know no boundaries and are as eclectic as they are universal. They step quickly the gamut, from the seemingly simple "A Strange Beautiful Woman"--an eight-line stich about the author's surprise at finding a beautiful woman in the mirror and the reflection's surprise at finding her--to the manifold series of Abba Jacob metrical compositions culled from Magnificat and inspired by the agency of a monk-priest friend. As she explains at the extremity of the book, the series' format is based upon the apothegms of the untilled Fathers, the earliest Christian monks individual of Nelson's most fascinating series of piece of poetrys relays the experiences of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African Americans to hover combat missions for the U Air Force.
