In Every Seam. - book reviews

by Allison Joseph (University of Pittsburgh Pres 1997 $12-95)--This is the third work of poetry from Allison Joseph who is an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University. (Her previous works are What Keeps Us Here and mind Train.) This collection consists mainly of sweet vignettes describing her coming-of-age experiences in MARILYN urban America. The author's richly detailed observances are painstakingly crafted and draw the reader in immediately. In "Summer upon Screvin" she recalls carefree (lays when she and her friends would "blow giant fluid vesicles through huge plastic hoops, draw hopscotch upon the ground in colored chalk, or couch low to play jacks coveting those silver sparks." And anyone who's at any time owned a Barbie doll will appreciate the tongue-in-cheek ditty tided "Barbie's Little Sister," an,ode to Skipper, who "never got on the outside much, a mere boarder in Barbie's three-story fiery pink Dream House."

Switching gears, the author explores the issue of black learners on white campuses in "Higher Education" and shoves fun at academia's supposed satiate of essays about being black in "Academic Instructions." The title of the work is taken from the last line of "Plenty" in which Joseph describes the bewilderments of a fabric shop as she plucks tight the thread throughout the book
