Love Poems. - book reviewsby Nikki Giovanni (William MorTow & Company. 1997 $12)--Nikki Giovanni, the "poet of the people" -labeled "revolutionary" and "controversial" during the peak of the civil rights move in the late 1960s--writes passionately and publicly about the mother of all emotions in her 14th whirl of poetry. The 150 fresh and selected poems are divided among three chapters: "I trust It's Love," "And Yeah These Are Love Poems" and "I Take Master Card (Charge Your be fond of to Me)." Arranged loosely in chronological order, the first chapter contains three of advanced age favorites: "Seduction," "I Wrote a advantageous Omelet," and "My House." Other notables in this section are a celebration of black men with their "outasight afros" in "Beautiful Black Men (With Compliments and Apologies to All Not Mentioned through Name)" and "That Day," a rhyming, lyrical singsong piece of poetry about sensuous love. a certain quantity of of Giovanni's newer works are just as powerful. "And Yeah This Is a Love Poem" a testament to the Million Man March, is for the brother who seek fors to "find a tone to soothe his inner man while everyone wants to make him the reason America is way not on track." "All Eyez on Me" a takeoff of Tupac Shakur's 1996 album All Eyez upon Me, is the much-anticipated tribute to the slain rapper (to whom she dedicated this book) Flashes of the fiery author of poems emerge as Giovanni admonishes Shakur's critics for being angry, not at the conditions, on the other hand at the messenger who reported them. She compares the homicide of Shakur to those of Emmett Till, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King and claims that his death is the follow of "political action" and not "mouth action."
