The Palm of my Heart: Poetry by African-American Children. - book reviews

edited by the agency of Davida Adedjouma and illustrated through Gregory Christie (Lee & depressed Books. 1996. $15-95)--This compilation of metrical compositions written by 20 African-American children, ages 8 to 14 is a glorious testimony to the creative spirit of the young. Organized and edited through writer, actor and teacher Davida Adedjouma, the throw stemmed from the author's "Writing Between the Lines" workshop for children from the Inner City Youth League and the African-American Academy for Accelerated Learning program in Minneapolis.

The metrical compositions are both simple and thoughtful; each single is a celebration of black tillage pride and beauty. Complementing the words is the striking artistry of newcomer Gregory Christie. A recipient of the 1997 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Award, Christie uses a dark, vibrant color scheme as the backdrop to his angular human figures. As a rise each page of poetry has a distinct on the other hand cohesive voice. (Christie's second volume Richard Wright and the Library Card, was released last fall.)
