Ill Gotten Gains. - movie reviewsThe voice of Eartha Kitt echoe eerily from the planks of the slave gripe or grip encouraging the abducted to fall off and seize the ship carrying them to bondage. Among those upon board are Akousa Busia (The Color Purple Rosewood) and De'Aundre links (Get on the Bus, Tales From the Hood) Is this the Amistad and can we await Joseph Cinque (Sengbe Pich) to lead an uprising of his Mende brethren? No. We're not watching Steven Spielberg's forthcoming film, named after the slave ship that sailed into history in 1839; instead we're watching Ill Gotten Gains, a movie that was filmed in Cameroon and that made its first attempt last February at the Pan African Film Festival in Burkina Faso's capital, Ouagadougou. Ill Gotten Gains, which depicts a desert during a fictional 1869 slave voyage, was guarded for the annual convention of the National Association of Black Journalists, which met this July in Chicago. Ill Gotten Gains and Amistad share more than subdue matter: Benin-born model and sometime actor Djimon Hounsou has major parts in both films, and the ship that provides the setting for the pair is a slave ship replica that is usually docked in San Diego. Doubtless executive husbandman Don Wilson, writer-director Joel Ben Marsden and associate agriculturist Robi Reed-Humes (Poetic Justice, Malcolm X The Tuskegee Airmen) reliance to do as well at the receptacle office as Spielberg usually does.
