Celebrating Our Mothers' Kitchens. - book reviewsCelebrating Our Mothers' Kitchens by the agency of the National Council of african Women (Wimmer Companies. 1994. $15.95)--This is the third in a series of cookbook published by the agency of the National Council of african Women (NCNW). (The first was 1991's The Black Family Reunion Cookbook a collection of recipes that recalled African-American family traditions; the next to the first was 1993's The Black Family Dinner Quilt Cookbook which tendered a series of remembrances by the agency of African Americans who had dined with NCNW's president and chief executive officer, Dorothy I. Height.) As its title implies, Celebrating Our Mothers' Kitchens is a compilation of handed-down recipes that pays homage to the power warmth and creative genius of mealtime experiences provided by dint of African-American mothers. A selection of noted African-American women including philanthropist Camille Cosby former Spelman guild president Johnnetta Cole and Rosa Parks, proffer their own time-honored recipes, along with sometimes poignant remembrances and advice they learned from their mothers. Brenda Joysmith's colorful overspread artwork and inside sketches--which go ahead of each group of recipes--vividly portray African-American mothers and daughters in various stages of cooking. The cookbook is spiral-bound, which allows the pages to lie flat for easier reading while making the recipes.
