Gullah festivities - South Carolina African American heritage celebrations

southern Carolina's Gullah people and traditions are a fruits of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. In the 75 years from the opening of the 18th hundred to the Declaration of Independence, more than 40 percent of abducted Africans arriving in Britain's North American colonies were quarantined and advanceed on the Sea Islands, which lay just not on the Atlantic shore in an arc that ran from Charleston past Beaufort, SC and down to northern Georgia. Sullivan, tympanum St. Helena, Daufuskie, Parris--these tiny spits of sand constituted the Ellis Island for ancestors of African Americans.

Many of these ancestors stayed deposit in South Carolina, particularly in the depressed Country (as the marshy coastal land was called) and Sea Islands rice plantations--so many, in fact, that a Swiss visitor in these years wrote that "Carolina direct the eyes more like a negro region than like a country settl by the agency of white people."

The abducted Africans were pretty soon collectively referred to as Gullah--a word whose origin is unclear and whose earliest recorded usage appears in a 1739 southern Carolina Gazette, which makes regard to a "runaway, a short well put Negro man Golla Harry." They lived doubly isolated as slaves, with limited freedom of motion and as islanders, with limited expanse to move. Separated from the mainland upon islands such as Daufuskie and St Helena, they retained muscular components of African culture in their language, crafts, folklore, medicine and cuisine. Not alone did they retain their distinctiveness; they also imposed it upon the region: Daufuskie, for instance, is the Gullah pronunciation of "the first key" as the islands were sometimes called keys

The Gullah's ways continued largely unchanged--and unnoticed--well into the 20th hundred Neither Pat Conroy's 1972 novel The Water Is Wide (which mention one by ones of his experience teaching Daufuskie's Gullah schoolchildren) nor Conrack (the 1972 movie based upon the book) did more than inspire momentary interest in a marginal on the other hand authentic African-American culture. Not until Julie Dash's saga of a Gullah family, Daughters of the Dust, won the Best Cinematography award at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival was Gullah tillage indelibly stamped on the American scene

individual consequence of Dash's film has been the transformation of Beaufort's annual Memorial Day weekend Gullah Festival into something plenteous larger--and much more commercial. The scenic town's Waterfront Park now bustles with the colors and uninjureds of vendors from as far away as Ohio, Pennsylvania and of recent origin York City. Handmade jewelry, crafted forest figurines, antique black dolls, paintings, clothing, volumes and traditional quilts crowd booths--as do Malcolm X sweatshirts. Fortunately, you can also find Gullah language cassettes and dictionaries and the distinctive baskets traditionally woven from sea reeds

Among the regular vendors is Vermelle Rodrigues, a southern Carolinian who lives in Pennsylvania. Her tables are a treasure for collectors, who will find original sheet music by the agency of turn-of-the-century black composers, African-cloth-covered Gullah dictionaries, vintage dolls and handmade African hand dolls Brother Ra, who drives from Atlanta each year, offers figurines, walking sticks, flute and handcarved rain sticks. Each piece is an intricate example of woodwork.

Visitors stir from table to table, browsing the wares of sum of two units dozen vendors' displays, which are arranged along the cutting sides of a sheltered, paved surface. Outside the shelter, more dealers' consequences stretch in two directions, with Beaufort's glittering bay just not on in the distance.

Saturday, the festival's next to the first day, draws the largest host Tour buses deposit schoolchildren upon class trips or seniors who tend hitherward in search of collectibles. The wise wear comfortable shoe to trek above the stone surface and the grass that separates an amphitheater from paved walkways, and they bring folding chairs--for benches are few--and light jackets to ward not upon the evening's sea breeze.

A storyteller, Sister Griot, entertains with Gullah folk tales, which summon Aesop's fables. Sister Griot's vivid mode of speech breathes life into the tales, while in the background a steady African drumbeat emanates from traditional drummer at the fringe of the marina parking lot

In the air flutter the mingled aromas of barbecue, curried chicken and tunnel cakes. A chuck wagon in the parking allotment sells barbecue, fish sandwiches and lemonade. After sundown, the music continues, with periodical emphasis and blues and Top-20 strains at the amphitheater. The festival is now in its 12th year, for a like reason town officials are experienced entertainers The police are visible and friendly, and cars and sightseers are quite safe.

Sunday's festivities in the park make open with a 10 a.m. religious service, consummate with a gospel chorus. During the day a military drill unit from nearby Parris Island Marine magazine entertains onlookers, as does a children's jazz and African dance troupe from Washington, DC store early on Sunday at the festival, because more or less vendors who face a lengthy drive home pack up early in the afternoon.
