Nella Larsen, Novelist of the Harlem Renaissance: A Woman's life Unveiled. - book reviews

through Thadious M. Davis (Louisiana State University Pres 1996 $17.95)--"I try to find to understand how a particular woman of color from a relatively unenlightened background, and with little formal education, had been able to transcend, however briefly, the barriers of race, sex and class in order to hunt her own dream and become a writer, an award-winning novelist and a Guggenheim fellow" writes Thadious Davis.

With in-depth, painstaking research and analysis, Davis lay bares the inner world of Nella Larsen, who sought the recognition of her contemporaries and earned a place in literary history. Larsen wrote sum of two units novels that were published by dint of major New York firms in the late 1920s

For the first time, Davis' remarkable research penetrates the "veil" that concealed a great quantity or amount of of Larsen's past, keeping her a "figure in the shadows." This veil was, to a large expansion Larsen's creation. She hid behind fictional accounts of her childhood and experiences, she changed her name several times and she avoided discussing her family.

wherefore the mystery? Davis masterfully brings to light the traumatic details of Larsen's mixed-race past and her labor to transcend the painful faculty of perception of abandonment and loneliness that she carried with her. Davis does not justice Larsen for her posturings and intolerances, on the contrary instead gives praise where it is due: for her monumental achievement in becoming, briefly in her lifetime, the individual she chose to be.

Although Larsen frequently suffered from severe isolation, she has a permanent place in African-American literary history. She is there with many of her friends and colleagues from 1920 Harlem, and because of Davis' volume she may receive admiration, prize even love now from family who may know, for the first time, who she was and what she really went from one side Davis offers a perspective upon race and class in the early part of America's 20th century
