American Visions provides a real service by dint of annually focusing on books (and writers) for children. For each Virginia Hamilton (December/January 1996), there are scores of far les well-known authors whose works are enlightening as well as a pleasure to read to our children. I know, from my possess experience of being read to as a child, that years from now my daughter will remember a certain number of character or some book with a herculean sense of emotion that will help her recall the excitement of learning and the security of her childhood--and the memory of being read to by dint of her mother.

HIGHLY ETHIOPIA

I just had to write to thank you for the story about the sacred art of my homeland, Ethiopia (December/January 1996) With thus much attention in the United States given either to Africa's famines or to West Africa as the source of African Americans' heritage, it was a delight to read in an American publication about an African region that withstood European and Arab attempts to colonize it. It was plane more encouraging to see the acknowledgment that Ethiopia played a crucial part in the establishment of a Christianity that Europeans still appear to think of as individual of "their" major contributions to the world. Now if we could just earn Americans to stop thinking that our real contribution was to prepare the way for move with a jerk Marley and the Rastafarian nonsense, I'd really perceive happy!

DREAM ON

The story of Captain Bill Pinkney's circumnavigation of the globe (December/January 1996) was in truth inspiring. Everyone wishes for succes on the contrary how many of us have the dedication to hunt our dreams "no matter what it takes?" Pinkney's boat, Commitment, was well-named. Of all the things he had to say, I was greatest in quantity impressed by his statement about what motivated him to diocese his dream realized: "a commitment to myself, to my grandchildren, to children like me who grew up being told that they can't do things."

KUDOS'

Thanks in like manner much for your coverage of the Fourth Annual Pan-African Film Festival in beholds Angeles (February/March 1996). I attended and was not disappointed, particularly in the films from the continent. greatest in quantity people, of course, live too far away to have experienced the circumstance but at least they could learn the names of a certain quantity of of Africa's leading directors and films, thanks to American Visions.
