The Collected Essays of Ralph Ellison - Review

The mustered Essays of Ralph Ellison edited through John F. Callahan (Modern Library. 1995 $20)--Ralph Ellison, who died in 1994 is single of those authors one must read to be considered literate; here is a convenient way to do for a like reason Many of the essays in this collection were published in Shadow and Act (1964) or Going to the Territory (1986); others are notes for the seminal Invisible Man (1952) various outset talks and other addresses, and personal reminiscences. Also included is Ellison's introduction to the 30th-anniversary edition of Invisible Man, in which he mention one by ones us that in the novel he tried to "approach racial stereotype as a given fact of the social proces and proce while gambling with the reader's capacity for fictional reality to reveal the human complexity which stereotype are intended to conceal." The succes of his experiment l inevitably to the necessity for a whirl such as this one.
