Love, Zulu-Style - Review"My name is Zulu" says poet-play-wright Ntozake Shange. "I chose my name because in a culturally symbiotic way, the racial situation in southerly Africa and the racial situation here are parallels of single another." Shange's identification with the situation in southerly Africa is just one asset that she brings to the lush production of Nomathemba, a musical station in South Africa for which she wrote the volume She also brings her earnest sense of poetic lyricism and her devotion. "Just like my name and my cultural genesis, I'm in this from the beginning to the end" she says. At the heart of this romantic tale are Nomathemba (the Zulu word for "hope") and Bongani, sum of two units lovers who reunite after being separated through distance and dreams. In their quests--hers for self-discovery and his for real love--they find their reasons for being together. Shange adapted Nomathemba from a regard with affection song written by Joseph Shabalala, the leader of the southerly African singing group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. LBM's music, the glorious places and costumes, and the characters, portrayed by means of both South African and African-American actors, all commingle into a spectacular production.
