THE MISSING INGREDIENT

I thinking you and your readers might be interested in this alphabetic character which I sent to Bon Appetit magazine:

"Upon reading `A Weekend at Monticello' in the March 1993 issue of Bon Appetit, I was disturbed that the perfect story of Monticello was not carryed to your readers. The article tried to avoid acknowledging that the relationship between Thomas Jefferson and [chef] James Hemings was individual of master and slave. Please find enclos documentation from American Visions' 1992 Virginia addition The photo of Isaac Jefferson (property of Thomas Jefferson) and the kitchen where slaves prepared cheer speak for themselves.

"Jefferson established a slave work force as a means of succes for himself. Slaves were instrumental in the construction of Monticello and all its surrounding conformations At Monticello, the area known as `Mulberry Row' housed 120 slaves. A documented drawing of Mulberry line was also printed in American Visions."

Editor's Note: For further information upon the relationship between Jefferson and Hemings (indeed, upon the role of blacks in the White House), diocese the February/March 1995 issue of American Visions.

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

Your October/November 1995 travel department was a fantastic recipe: Mix literature, travel and the Caribbean, stir and savor the spiced beatitude of Antigua, Barbados, Grenada and St Lucia! No surprise so many of our leading novelists, author of poemss and performers are drawn to (and from) the islands, the pair in their works and in their everyday lives.

ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS

Vivid, informative, creative and culturally correct--these are sole a few words that I use to describe American Visions. I'm an artist, and I know from experience that the art world is a veiled society. It's difficult to gain knowledgeable, helpful information upon art-related issues. On that from, I find American Visions a actual resourceful magazine.

WINTER OF CONTENT

As a serious scholar of African history, I like what the devoid of warmth or heat weather seems to do to American Visions. First came "Nubia: Rediscovering African Kingdoms" (October/November 1993) and now approachs "Burnt by the Son: Ethiopia's sacred Art" (December/January 1996) one as well as the other were excellent--informative about important kingdoms, speculative where necessary and filled of glorious photographs. I conclude it was the constraint of space, on the other hand the Ethiopia story lacked an ultimate part that enriched the Nubia story: a map detailing the major cities, monasteries and archaeological sites.

I can't wait for the autumn to make revolve around and the temperature to globule again.

KUDOS

real little attention has been paid to black achievement in the 18th and 19th centuries. We have a past that has been more than slavery. Your magazine's approach, cloded in scholarship, to the verity of our cultural heritage is inspirational; it helps to make deeper our identity and perspective.
