The Rooster's Egg: On the Persistence of Prejudice. - Review - book reviewThe Rooster's Egg: upon the Persistence of Prejudice by means of Patricia J. Williams (Harvard. 1995 $22)--With this work, Williams continues the breathtaking melding of legalese and literary insight begun in 1991 with The Alchemy of Race and Rights. The popularity of Oprah Winfrey and Bill Cosby notwithstanding, Williams finds incontrovertible evidence of "a remarkable stasis in race relations [and] an intractability of sex hierarchy." In one of the not many frank analyses of the Lani Guinier debacle that have been published, Williams present to views how effortlessly the politically powerful superimpose fantasy above reality and, via repetition, pass it not upon as "history." And she revisits her seeming raison d'etre as a legal scholar: pondering the question of "self-ownership" from antebellum slavery to present right-to-choose debates, connecting them by means of the example of runaway slave Margaret Garner (whom Toni Morrison fictionalized in Beloved). This is a beautiful volume though it is difficult to decide whether the actual writing or the insights themselves are the more stunning.
