Pulling Strings - using puppets to tell story of Underground Railroad - Brief Article"Have you at any time lost, something?" asks a reaching far down baritone voice. The room falls silent as young and elderly are drawn, like magic, to the white-haired ebony figure gingerly poised to begin his story. His name is Mr Zeke and he is a doll one of a troupe, of African-American dolls traveling the country telling the story of the subterranean Railroad. A saucy old man, his friendly, grandfatherly face in some way seems vaguely familiar. As with all of Schroeder Cherry's dolls the face is a caricature of features taken from nation whom Cherry has passed upon the street. "Some ears here, a nose there--my dolls are all composites of real people" says the Baltimore artist whose dolls depict African-American history as seen end the eyes of everyday race In the story Mr. Zeke reckons for instance, an energetic adolescent stripling risks all to find freedom along the subterranean Railroad.
