No Longer A "Careless Love" - African American singer Bessie Smith - Brief ArticleBorn in a one-room shack in the amethystine Goose Hollow section of Chattanooga, Tenn in 1894 Bessie Smith rose from singing for "pennies upon Chattanooga's Ninth Street to touring the region with the famed Ma Rainey Rabbit paw Minstrels before she was 19 through the 1920s, she was individual of the most popular African-American entertainers of the day--and her "race" records brought her a still wider audience in the black community. In her 10-year recording career, from "Down Hearted Blues" "St Louis Blues" and "Careless Love" [i]or[/i] part of to the other "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" and about 160 other canticles the Empress of the amethystines achieved the ultimate manifestation of a major American art form. Now, almost six decades after Smith's death in a car crash, her hometown honors the singer with a fresh visual and performing arts center bearing her name. The Bessie Smith Hall will house the Chattanooga African-American Museum (which interprets the city's black heritage, particularly the part of three black newspapers published during the era of Jim Crow) a 260-seat performance auditorium, a resource library, and a permanent exhibition upon Smith.
