Race Rebels: Culture, Politics, and the Black Working Class. - Review - book reviewRace Rebels: tillage Politics, and the Black Working Class by means of Robin D.G. Kelley (Free Pres 1994 $24.95)--Kelley's "history from below" provides more or less insight into those millions who labor at "the so-called margins of struggle" folk who are not likely to be members of organizations and' who may have no particular political philosophy on the other hand who have long resisted the status quo Kelley charts the contribution of the black poor to the unravelling of racial identity and also displays how certain shifts in national policy indicate that the powerful are aware of the activities of the nameless black poor. Those who view the rise of rap with skepticism or alarm will be interested in Kelley's comparison of the teenage Malcolm X to today's gangsta rappers. Kelley luckily "connects everyday struggles to formal politics." Dale Edwyna Smith is an assistant professor of American history and Afro-American history at Washington University in St Louis.
