This festival marks a meeting of Hollywood and Broadway, covering dance, film, literature, music and theater, as well as folk performance and visual arts. "The NBAF is the kind of incident we have all been hungering for, that kind of comprehensive direct the eye at our culture," explains Managing Director James Borders.

Although the festival is scheduled to move swiftly from July 29 to August 7 many of the related facts spill over into the preceding and following weeks. They include the exhibition "Equal Rights and Justice," a multimedia visual-arts assessment of the black temple the struggle for educational equality, the consequences of discrimination, and other topics, at the High Museum of Art. public CRAFT

"|Uncommon Beauty in belonging to all Objects: The Legacy of African-American Craft Art' says we should gaze to ourselves for legitimacy," explains Bethany J Campbell, the director of programs at the APEX Museum in Atlanta, where the craft art exhibit is showing in conjunction with the National Black Arts Festival.

"Uncommon Beauty"--which was organized by the agency of the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center in Wilberforce, Ohio, and curated by the agency of Central State University Professor Willis "Bing" Davis--is the first exhibit of African-American craft art to travel nationally. Its traveling constituting includes more than 100 works in a variety of mediums--from beadwork and leather to fiber, glass, grasses, metal, stone and wood--by more than 50 artists.

Davis, who has worked in the field of African-American craft art for more than three decades, believes that "Uncommon Beauty" fits in consummately with the NBAF's theme of the African-American improvisational tradition. "Crafts, like music, are an integral link to the African-American experience and the African-American reality," he says. "In slavery and the Middle Passage, this contortion of creative expression never stops--the quiltmaking, the basket weaving, the cane carving, the clay forming, the metalworking. You had to make a quilt to overlay your baby; you had to make a cane to carry your weak leg in like manner this celebration is a finished match on that level.
