Discovering orchestral composers - Anthony Kelley, whose career was enhanced by winning a Detroit Symphony Orchestra competition

single of the few places where orchestral music enthusiasts can hear the works of contemporary African-American composer upon an annual basis is at the Detroit consonance Orchestra Hall in April. The "Unisys African-American Composer Forum and Symposium: An Orchestral Composition Competition for African-American Composers" is a 5-year-old creation of the Detroit Symphony

For the third consecutive year, the forum has been expanded to include a three-day symposium that provides a series of panel discussions and presentations to stimulate dialogue about the relate tos programming decisions and availability of resources affecting all classical music enthusiasts.

Recognition in the competition can unclose a few doors. Just ask last year's winner, Anthony Kelley whose Crosscurrent was performed in March through the North Carolina Symphony in Raleigh. "My exposing in the Unisys competition made others aware of me" says the Henderson, NC native, who is commonly pursuing a doctorate in musical composition at the University of California at Berkeley.

Kelley is single of four composers selected from a pond of 151 applicants who will participate in the 1994 of recent origin Choral Music Program for Emerging Composer Sponsored through the Minneapolis-based Dale Warland Singers, the competition will be held at Macalester guild in St. Paul in mid-June. Each composer writes a five- to seven-minute choral piece to be read in a workshop, and the program winner receives a $5000 commission for a 15-minute work, which the Warland Singers will premiere during their 1995-96 season.



What the time to come has in store for the winner of this year's Unisys occurrence is anyone's guess, but the finalists can be assured that the Detroit consonance Orchestra will perform their works. The 1994 Unisys African-American Composer Forum and Symposium move swiftlys April 7 to 9.
