William Johnson's Natchez: The Ante-Bellum Diary of a Free Negro. - book reviewsWilliam Johnson a unrestrained Negro in Natchez, Miss., kept a diary from 1835 till his homicide in 1851 William Johnson'snatcbez: The Ante-Bellum Diary of a at liberty Negro, Louisiana State University Pres 1993) Born a slave, Johnson was fre by the agency of his owner (who was also his father) in 1820 when he was about 11 He became a barber, lent standard of value and bought rental property and more than 1000 acres of farmland. He lent currency to white men. Most repaid him, on the other hand when they would not, he had no recourse because smooth free blacks could not take whites to court. When he visited relatives in fresh Orleans, traveling by steamboat, his wife was denied a cabin smooth though he could afford the passage. Johnson's solutions were ingenious: When whites refused to repay loans, he sold their notes to other white men and he simply bribed the captain of the steamboat to procure his wife a stateroom. Johnson's diary contains hardly any details of his life. Sometimes, however there are poignant veiled revelations: "I saw a Young man by means of the name of Horton Kick a Young man through the name of Brown upon the Back Side and made him step quickly out of the House and he did not be indignant at it Oh that a man Can stand more or less things is most true." Better educated than Johnson was Charles W Chesnutt (1858-1932) who was a academy principal at 22, read widely, and studied history, Latin, French and German. Chesnutt embodied the quintessential American desire for self-betterment. He also knew however, by what means much race threatened to limit him. COPYRIGHT 1994 Heritage Information Holdings, Inc.
