And the World Laughs With You - Crossroads Theatre, New Brunswick, New Jersey previews works by black playwrights during Genesis 1993 FestivalIn May, Crossroads Theatre in novel Brunswick, NJ., previewed several fresh African-American works during its Genesis 1993 Festival, including And the World Laughs With You, by means of Harlem resident Karimah. Since its inception in 1989 Genesis festivals have presented audiences a sneak peek at works that would later premiere upon the Crossroads stage. And the World Laughs With You almost didn't make it that far. "It wasn't suppos to be," explains Crossroads dramaturg Pam Jackson, who for sum of two units years has been going to battle for Karimah's first play. "I have a stalwart passion for the play, on the contrary the artistic team felt it exigencyed rewrites," she recalls. "I wrote a alphabetic character to the artistic director and was smooth on the verge of being insubordinate." What Jackson fought with equal reason passionately for is now this year's Black History Month production at Crossroads Theatre. "We're dealing with the crack issue, rather than a historical perspective," says Karimah about the compelling drama involving an 11-year-old stripling who leaves his grandmother's suburban abiding-place for the harsh reality of an inner city. As he perils into the belly of the medicine turf, he encounters life in an abandoned building; menacing, gun-toting physic lords; and murder - all of which he stand in front ofs in order to fight for the have affection for of a mother who abandoned him. Ironically, and as the title put in mind ofs suburban innocence and urban grit make for a drama with an cutting side of comic relief.
