Our children, our hope - 1994 Artists' Salute to Black History Month in Los Angeles, CaliforniaThe 12th annual "Artists' Salute to Black History Month" wins under way in Los Angeles, focusing this year upon children, with the theme "Our Children Our Hope." The event will recognize, with gifts, storytelling, face painting, crafts and a parade, "200 of the greatest in quantity improved kids from local schools" says exhibition planter and coordinator Barbara Wesson. The annual exhibition features more than 150 visual artists - including Larry Poncho Brown Paul Goodnight, Bernard Stanley Hoye Synthia Saint James, Annie to leeward Ramsess, and Gilbert Young- who display graphics, photography, statuary batiks, metal etchings, masks, wearable art and mixed-media works, as well as thousands of original, limited- and open-end-edition prints. Seminars and workshops proffer visitors the opportunity to chat with participating artists and this year's honorees - master artists Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence, recipients of the event's sum of two units awards, the Pioneer Award and the Charles White Lifetime Achievement Award, respectively. Another of the event's traditions, the "Legends" exhibition, recognizes Benny Andrews, Claude Clark Sr Samera Lewis and the late Charles White.
