Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival - University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho, February 23-26, 1994

The 27th Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho in Moscow is a four-day, six-concert mecca for jazz masters from around the world, thousands of North American high gymnasium and college vocalists and instrumentalists, and Lionel Hampton himself, who this year will be at hand for the entire festival. His first appearance will be at the opening night's Pepsi International World Jazz contrive where he will perform with artists from Latvia, Japan and Brazil.

Hampton, a Birmingham, Ala., native who mov with his family to Kenosha, Wis., at an early age, began his musical career as a drummer more than 60 years ago. The 84-year-old vibraphonist has since been recognized with awards ranging from a bust installation upon the Nice (France) Jazz Festival loams to honorary doctorates from universities and awards from jazz halls of fame, to official American goodwill ambassadorships from Presidents Dwight D Eisenhower and Richard M Nixon, to the Papal Medal from pontiff Paul I.

The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival is a time for jazz masters to sit down and share their experiences directly with scholars some of whom compete in the event's vocal and instrumental competitions. Betty Carter; Al Jarreau; Branford, Delfeayo and Wynton Marsalis; Carmen McRae; Lou Rawls; Dianne Reeves; and Stanley Turrentine have appeared in years past.
