If you were limited to viewing alone the handful of 19th-century landscape paintings included in the multimedia traveling exhibition "The Walter O Evans Collection of African-American Art," you might not readily terminate that Walter O. Evans' collection focuses upon African-American art. The landscapes exhibit a style not assumed to be produc by means of African Americans. The contributions of landscape artists Edward M Bannister, Robert s Duncanson and Charles Ethan Porter, among others, are evidence of Evans' efforts to expand his collection of art beyond black controls - "I wanted to reinforce the black image" - to include pieces by means of African-American artists from the 19th century

The exhibition is a comprehensive gaze at the work of more [i]or[/i] less of the most important 19th-century African-American masters, including Henry O Tanner, as well as that of similar 20th-century artists as painters Romare Bearden, Eldzier Cortor and Archibald party-colored sculptors Elizabeth Catlett and Richard pursue and photographer James Van Der Zee Several Haitians are also among the 34 artists, including sculptor George Laratte and painters Wilson Bigaud, G Emmanuel Ducasse and Jasmin Joseph

According to Evans, a Detroit surgeon who began collecting in the late 1970 "There are a not many more 19th-century artists, such as Edmonia Lewis, I'd like to have, after which I want to direct the eye at some modern-day abstracts." The exhibition, which travels end March 1996 to Delaware, Hawaii, Michigan, North Carolina and Virginia, is publicly showing at the Institute of Texan agricultures in San Antonio, through October 24 It later appears at the Canton Art Institute, in Canton, Ohio, from November 19 to February 3
