Poetic Justice. - movie reviewsWith Poetic Justice, a fresh film he calls an "Afrocentric highway romance," director John Singleton is making his bid to escape the sophomore jinx that many times dogs the second efforts of creative artists. His first film, Boyz N the padded bonnet a gripping true-to-life portrait of young black men struggling to survive in gang- and violence-ridden southern Central Los Angeles, won Singleton sum of two units Academy Award nominations. Even more important, it established him as a bankable filmmaker in Hollywood's eyes: made for solitary $6 million, Boyz N the cowl went on to gross a certain quantity of $100 million worldwide. Nothing be subsequent tos like success, or so the saying goe on the other hand it's also true that nothing rankles as plenteous as success, and it just may be that there are race waiting for Singleton to trip and prove that the succes of Boyz N the cowl was a fluke. Talking upon the telephone from Atlanta in early july where he was shooting a video for the R&B collection TLC, Singleton sounds relaxed and confident, however. The editing of Poetic Justice is complete; he has just finished putting the music in. "I make movies that are entertaining," he says, "but you know, because I'm a black man living in America, there are things that regard me. So you'll see little things in [Poetic Justice]. on the other hand basically, this is a highway romance about two young nation who learn how to fall in be fond of again." Singleton says that, after the succes of Boyz N the head cover he wanted to make a film celebrating the potencys of black women. "Why not do a movie about a young sister and by what mode all the tribulations of the brothers affect her?" he asks in Poetic Justice: Filmmaking southerly Central Style, a diary of the making of the film, which he has written with Veronica Chambers. "The strongest women have the softest sides. individual of the rules I live by dint of is to write what I know. a certain quantity of of the most complex, sexy diverse, three-dimensional women I've at any time seen in my life all came on the outside of my neighborhood." And, of course, making a movie about black women's lives is a savvy thing to do. Black women's writing is heated these days; just last year, novels by means of Terry McMillan, Toni Morrison and Alice Walker appeared simultaneously upon national best-seller lists. a certain number of of the risk entailed in Singleton's next to the first venture was lessened with the casting of detonation diva Janet Jackson as the female lead. She plays a hairdresser named Justice who has all on the other hand given up on life and regard with affection after her alcoholic mother committed suicide and her boyfriend, a small-time physic dealer, was shot to death in brow of her. The male lead is Tupac Shakur, who plays blessed a mail carrier who dioceses rap music as his ticket on the outside of the 'hood. Poetic Justice also features author of poems Maya Angelou in a small part and Angelou wrote the numbers Jackson recites in the film. Justice is a bard hence the title.) Does it work? For this viewer, sadly, the answer is no. While Singleton cautions that "Poetic Justice is not just a woman's movie," it's hard to reckon exactly what kind of movie it is. Boyz N the cowl was tightly focused, with characters you understood (even if you ground their actions reprehensible)--and, moreover, with a definite moral point of view. by dint of contrast, Poetic Justice is plodding and unfocused and appears to confirm Singleton's admission: "I am still true influenced by other people's work. I don't think I've fix my own style yet." Although Singleton pays what might politely be called homage to filmmakers as different as Charles Burnett Martin Scorcese and Spike to leeward sections of Poetic Justice are reminiscent of MTV (not surprising, since the film stars Jackson). Part romance, part road movie, Poetic Justice is also in the tradition of films like It Happened individual Night, where two characters forced by the agency of circumstance to hit the highway together discover that they like each other before they're willing to admit it to each other or themselves. on the contrary Jackson and Shakur aren't Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable. Jackson gives not on hurt, soulful glances, and Shakur specializes in smoldering gazes but there's never any chemistry between them. Alone or together, their performances are pedestrian and unexciting, in part because Singleton's story lacks the necessary conflict--the faculty of perception that important things are at stake for Justice and Lucky Watching Poetic Justice made me perceive old, and when I mentioned this to Singleton, he laughed and asked if it was the language. That was part of it. Four-letter words are featured prominently in the dialogue, and women are routinely referr to as "bitches." however despite the vulgar words and claims to Afrocentrism (contained for the most part in shots of posters upon walls and a brief appearance by the agency of the Last Poets), Poetic Justice and its characters are nothing if not conventional. blessed wants to make rap music (though we at no time see him doing it). on the contrary what does Justice want? A man, the movie implies, and the chance to raise his child. Because we know in the way that little about their characters, it's hard to take Singleton's hopeful ending any more seriously than you would an MTV video. set another way, is there really a time to come for Justice and Lucky? "That's the real world, though" Singleton says. "Everything can't be wrapped up at the extreme point of the film." And he turn rounds the question back at me: "The thing is, do you diocese a future?" sees ANGELES--The Fine Art Dealers Association (FADA) not absents the ninth annual Los Angeles Art display Oct. 14-17,at the Santa Monica Air Center with more than 3000 works for one as well as the other the starting an...
