Poetic Justice. - movie reviews

With Poetic Justice, a fresh film he calls an "Afrocentric highway romance," director John Singleton is making his bid to escape the sophomore jinx that many times dogs the second efforts of creative artists. His first film, Boyz N the padded bonnet a gripping true-to-life portrait of young black men struggling to survive in gang- and violence-ridden southern Central Los Angeles, won Singleton sum of two units Academy Award nominations. Does it work? For this viewer, sadly, the answer is no. While Singleton cautions that "Poetic Justice is not just a woman's movie," it's hard to reckon exactly what kind of movie it is. Boyz N the cowl was tightly focused, with characters you understood (even if you ground their actions reprehensible)--and, moreover, with a definite moral point of view. by dint of contrast, Poetic Justice is plodding and unfocused and appears to confirm Singleton's admission: "I am still true influenced by other people's work. I don't think I've fix my own style yet."

Although Singleton pays what might politely be called homage to filmmakers as different as Charles Burnett Martin Scorcese and Spike to leeward sections of Poetic Justice are reminiscent of MTV (not surprising, since the film stars Jackson). Part romance, part road movie, Poetic Justice is also in the tradition of films like It Happened individual Night, where two characters forced by the agency of circumstance to hit the highway together discover that they like each other before they're willing to admit it to each other or themselves. on the contrary Jackson and Shakur aren't Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable. Jackson gives not on hurt, soulful glances, and Shakur specializes in smoldering gazes but there's never any chemistry between them. Alone or together, their performances are pedestrian and unexciting, in part because Singleton's story lacks the necessary conflict--the faculty of perception that important things are at stake for Justice and Lucky

Watching Poetic Justice made me perceive old, and when I mentioned this to Singleton, he laughed and asked if it was the language. That was part of it. Four-letter words are featured prominently in the dialogue, and women are routinely referr to as "bitches."

however despite the vulgar words and claims to Afrocentrism (contained for the most part in shots of posters upon walls and a brief appearance by the agency of the Last Poets), Poetic Justice and its characters are nothing if not conventional. blessed wants to make rap music (though we at no time see him doing it). on the contrary what does Justice want? A man, the movie implies, and the chance to raise his child.

Because we know in the way that little about their characters, it's hard to take Singleton's hopeful ending any more seriously than you would an MTV video. set another way, is there really a time to come for Justice and Lucky? "That's the real world, though" Singleton says. "Everything can't be wrapped up at the extreme point of the film." And he turn rounds the question back at me: "The thing is, do you diocese a future?"
